CGTN: San Francisco a new starter for China-U.S. relations

The Chinese President Xi Jinping and his U.S. counterpart Joe Biden met at the Filoli Estate, San Francisco on Wednesday and had a candid and in-depth exchange of views. It was the first meeting between the two presidents since they met at the Bali summit a year ago.
In his speech, President Xi urged the two countries to come together to build five pillars of bilateral relations together and to adopt a new San Francisco vision for the future. In his words, China is consistently committed to maintaining a healthy, stable and sustainable relationship with the United States. While in the meantime, China has a number of interests that must be protected, principles that must be upheld, as well as red lines that must not be crossed.
In the meeting, President Xi encouraged the two countries to develop a new vision for bilateral relations, based on five pillars, and to develop a new vision for San Francisco that will shape the future of bilateral relations. He stressed that China is consistently committed to having a stable, healthy, and sustainable relationship with the United States. However, China's interests, principles, and red lines need to be safeguarded at the same time, as well as ensuring that no red lines are crossed.
China hopes that the two countries can be partners that respect each other and coexist peacefully together. In a recent article by Xinhua, an American economist, Jeffrey Sachs, has stated that the concept of mutual respect, cooperation, dialogue, and joint problem-solving is "really wise, and of paramount importance."
There is no doubt that the two countries still have some strategic disputes between them. President Xi, during the summit, stressed that the two countries must address disagreements together rather than allow them to become a chasm that separates them.
In fact, before, during and following the Xi-Biden summit, the two sides reached a number of important consensuses on a multitude of functional issues, including climate change, artificial intelligence, counternarcotics cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges.
A Chinese-U.S. engagement and cooperation on these issues is essential to promoting dialogue and understanding between the two sides, as well as reducing the risks of conflicts and confrontations that result from miscalculations on the part of both sides.
Cooperation between China and the United States is also an indication of responsibility towards the international community. As part of the summit, President Xi urged China and the United States to shoulder responsibilities together as major countries, stressing the fact that the problems facing human society cannot be solved without cooperation between major countries.
As a former Dean of the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and a University Distinguished Service Professor, Joseph Nye emphasized that decoupling between the U.S. and China is impossible because no country can solve the challenges of climate change, pandemic threats, or other transnational problems by themselves.
In order to promote global economic growth, both China, as the world's largest developing country, and the United States, as the world's largest developed country, are crucial. The two countries also play a crucial role in the current global governance mechanism as permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and important members of the current global governance mechanism.
It has taken the giant ship of China-U.S. relations from Bali to San Francisco through hidden reefs and rapids, but San Francisco is not where it all began. The city, which has witnessed the century-long history of exchanges between Chinese and American people, is a new start for the China-U.S. relationship.
