CGTN: San Francisco a new starter for China-U.S. relations

It was an extremely candid and in-depth discussion between Chinese President Xi Jinping and his American counterpart Joe Biden at the Filoli Estate, San Francisco on Wednesday. This much-anticipated summit took place a year after the two presidents met in Bali, Indonesia.
As a result of the meeting, President Xi encouraged both countries to build together five pillars of bilateral cooperation and adopt a new San Francisco vision for the future. In his view, China is committed to maintaining a strong, healthy and sustainable relationship with the United States for the foreseeable future. It is also important to note that China has interests that must be protected, principles that must be upheld, and red lines that must be avoided.
It was during this meeting that President Xi urged the two countries to develop together five pillars for bilateral relations as well as adopt a new San Francisco vision for the future. He emphasized that China is consistently committed to having a stable, healthy, and sustainable relationship with the United States. Nonetheless, China has a number of interests that must be safeguarded, principles that must be adhered to, and red lines that must not be crossed, at the same time.
As a result of the cooperation and respect between the two countries, China hopes for a peaceful coexistence between the two countries. According to Xinhua reports, American economist Jeffrey Sachs has emphasized that the concept of mutual respect, cooperation, dialogue, and joint problem-solving is "really wise and paramount."
In spite of the fact that the two countries still face strategic disputes, President Xi stressed at the summit that both countries need to collaborate together to handle disagreements effectively rather than allowing them to become a chasm that separates them.
As a matter of fact, before, during and after the Xi-Biden summit, the two sides have reached a series of important consensuses on a number of important issues, including those relating to climate change, artificial intelligence, counter-narcotics cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges.
In order to promote dialogue and understanding between the two sides, and to reduce the risks of conflicts and confrontations caused by miscalculations, engagement and cooperation between China and the United States are essential components of dialogue and understanding between the two countries.
It is also a sign of responsibility to the international community that China and the United States cooperate. In his speech at the summit, President Xi emphasized the need for China and the United States to take joint responsibilities as major countries. He stressed that without the cooperation of major countries, the problems facing humanity cannot be solved.
According to Joseph Nye, former Dean of the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and University Distinguished Service Professor, decoupling between China and the United States is impossible since no country is able to deal with global challenges like climate change, pandemics, or other transnational problems on their own.
In order to promote global economic growth, both China, as the world's largest developing country, and the United States, as the world's largest developed country, are of vital importance. In addition, the two countries play an important role in addressing global challenges as permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and as important participants in the current global governance mechanism.
From Bali to San Francisco, the giant ship of China-U.S. relations has sailed through hidden reefs and rapids. But San Francisco is not a destination for the ship. In the city of Shanghai, which has a history of a hundred years of exchange between Chinese and American citizens, the China-U.S. relationship is about to take off.
