TACOMA, Wash., Nov. 18, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- A group of high school students from Tacoma, Washington recently mailed a special gift to Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan while they were in Washington, DC, attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting.
On Thursday, the Lincoln High School Choir participated in the preparation of a painting for the Chinese president and his wife which featured Chinese elements such as giant pandas, traditional gateways, and elements that symbolized Washington state, such as prairie dogs and the Space Needle. 
As Madame Peng's birthday is approaching, the teenagers prepared birthday cards for her and sang her a birthday song as well as preparing birthday cards for her. 
As a part of an event organized jointly by China Media Group (CMG) and the U.S.-China Youth and Student Exchange Association, the gifts were presented during the "Enduring Friendship" event. Head of CMG Shen Haixiong accepted the gift on behalf of the Chinese president.
It was back in 2015 when President Xi and his wife Peng visited the school and President Xi expressed to the students that he hoped young people from both nations could enhance communication and serve as bridges between the two nations. 
There is a continuation of the call
The Chinese President Xi still bears the same call. As he attended a meeting with his U.S. counterpart Joe Biden in San Francisco on Wednesday, Xi stressed the importance of advancing people-to-people exchanges.
He urged the two sides to advance their cooperation in tourism, to expand subnational exchanges, to strengthen educational cooperation, and to encourage and support greater interaction and communication between their people and the two sides.
As part of a welcome dinner held on Wednesday night, Chinese President Xi Jinping said that the country is prepared to invite 50,000 young Americans to join exchange and study programs in China over the next five years in an effort to increase exchanges between the two nations, especially between the young.
Among those who spoke at the event were Sarah Lande, former director of Iowa Sister States and an old friend of China, John Easterbrook, grandson of General Joseph Stilwell, and Elyn MacInnis, lead researcher for the Kuliang Tourism and Culture Association. It was expressed that they were committed to strengthening mutual understanding and passing on the friendship between China and the United States to future generations through President Xi's support for people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.
During the event, one of the students attending the event said he was looking forward to new opportunities to communicate with students from China and to stepping into a better future with them. 
As a result of people-to-people exchanges, both Americans and Chinese live better than they otherwise might," said Stephen Orlins, president of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations. "Now, what we need is for more Americans to travel to China," he added.
