The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with 6G-SANDBOX, a pan-European testbed for 6G experimentation funded by Smart Networks and Service Joint Undertaking under Horizon Europe. By establishing the connection between 6G-SANDBOX testbeds with Taiwan's telecommunications ecosystem, this partnership aims to enhance cooperation between European and Taiwanese enterprises in the realm of 6G research.
As part of the 6G-SANDBOX project, ITRI and 6G-SANDBOX are focusing on several areas such as joint communications and sensing (JCAS) and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS).. The ITRI will facilitate the 6G-SANDBOX's access to critical components, including 5G cores, 5G O-RAN base stations, SMO/RIC management platforms, JCAS frameworks, and advanced tools for network planning and emulation.. ITRI will play a vital role within the Taiwanese ecosystem by actively engaging companies in the signing of the memorandum of understanding. On November 8, 2016, ITRI representatives visited the 6G-SANDBOX testbed in Malaga to commemorate the initiation of this collaboration.

In a recent interview, Pang-An Ting, General Director of ITRI's Information and Communications Research Laboratories, discussed some of ITRI's recent achievements in the sector of ICT. As part of our visit to Gothenburg for the EuCNC & 6G Summit this year, ITRI collaborated closely with leading lights from academia and industry in the 6G space during our stay. With our European counterparts, we explored the possibility of establishing robust research and development partnerships. Additionally, I would like to announce that ITRI has joined the esteemed ranks of the 6G-IA as a member of the organization. Our goal is to lay the groundwork for collaborative experimentation between people in Europe and Taiwanese companies and institutes, concentrating on both 5G and 6G technologies, through the seamless integration of 5G and 6G technologies, applications, and experimental networks into the 6G-SANDBOX testbeds.. I would like to thank Auray Technology for expressing keen interest in contributing their expertise in OTIC, including RAN Intelligent Controller and security testing.. In addition, we plan to extend invitations to universities and other Taiwanese companies in the future, aligning our shared commitment to innovating 5G networks and defining 6G standards in the very near future

According to Michael Dieudonne, the 6G-SANDBOX coordinator, "We are trying to develop a comprehensive research platform for 6G applications by connecting the 6G-SANDBOX testbeds to the ITRI experimental network in a robust manner. By signing this Memorandum of Understanding, we will be able to work together with thought leaders around the world to conduct joint experiments that will further advance wireless communication."
As part of the 6G-SANDBOX project, launched in January of 2023, Keysight Technologies leads a team of esteemed partners that include COSMOTE, Eurescom, FOGUS Innovations & Services and others. The Fraunhofer FOKUS project, the ICTFICIAL OY project, and the INFOLYSIS project., Institute for Software Engineering and Technologies (ITIS) at the University of Malaga, Lenovo, IS-Wireless (ISRD), the National Centre for Scientific Research "Demokritos" (NCSRD), Nokia eXtended Reality Lab, OpenNebula Systems SL, OWO, Queen's University Belfast, Telefonica, and the University of Oulu are just a few of the companies involved.. This project aims to develop a large-scale EU-wide experimental platform that will be used for experimenting with 6G technologies in the future. As a result of this platform, companies and research institutions are able to test and validate their new technologies, including promising technical 6G enablers such as network automation, cybersecurity, digital twins, artificial intelligence (AI), and energy optimization technology.. The 6G-SANDBOX is a fully configurable, manageable, and controlled end-to-end network that includes both digital and physical nodes. This allows the validation of new technologies and research advancements for 6G to be made.
