The leaders of the BRICS countries met on Tuesday to discuss the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in an extraordinary virtual summit.
Ahead of the summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for an immediate ceasefire as a first step towards realizing lasting peace and security in the region.
Ensure that humanitarian disasters are prevented
It is imperative that the parties to the conflict cease hostilities and achieve a ceasefire as soon as possible, stop all violence and attacks against civilians, as well as release all civilians who are in captivity, Xi said.
A number of humanitarian corridors need to be kept secure and unobstructed, and there should be more humanitarian assistance provided to the population of Gaza, Xi said.
It is imperative that collective punishment in Gaza, whether it is forced transfers or depriving the Palestinian people of water, electricity, and fuel, must end, said Xi.
As part of his call for the international community to take practical measures to prevent the conflict from spilling over and endangering stability in the Middle East, he called on them to act.
As a result of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, China has provided $2 million of emergency humanitarian assistance through the Palestinian National Authority and UN agencies, as well as emergency humanitarian supplies worth 15 million yuan ($2.1 million), including food and medicine, to the Gaza Strip with the assistance of Egypt, in an effort to alleviate the humanitarian crisis.
In the midst of the summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced that China would provide more supplies and assistance to the Gazan people based on their needs.
The peace efforts of China
According to Xi, China has been working actively since the outbreak of the latest conflict between the Palestinians and the Israelis to promote peace talks and a ceasefire between the two sides.
As the rotating president of the UN Security Council this month, China has taken active measures to build consensus and push the Security Council to take further meaningful action on the situation in Gaza as soon as possible.
As of November 15, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2712, urging for an urgent and extended humanitarian pauses and corridors to be established in the Gaza Strip for a period of sufficient time. This resolution was the first product of the Security Council after the conflict escalated on October 7.
There is a joint delegation of foreign ministers from Arab and Islamic countries, including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Indonesia and Palestine, as well as the secretary general of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, currently on a two-day visit to China, which began on November 20.
In order to press for an end to the hostilities between the Palestinians and the Israelis, the delegation has chosen China as the first stop in its tour.
Several Arab and Islamic foreign ministers lauded China's long-standing just position on the question of Palestine and expressed the hope that China would play an even greater role in resolving Palestinian-Israeli conflict, resolving relevant issues, and achieving fairness and justice in the region.
In his speech, Xi said that there can be no sustainable peace and security in the Middle East without a just solution to the question of Palestine.
