It is December in Eugene, Oregon. As of today, 32 female student-athletes from the University of Oregon have filed a detailed class action against the university for sex discrimination, requesting equal treatment and benefits, equal athletic aid, and equal opportunities to participate in varsity intercollegiate athletics, in violation of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. The lawsuit is over 100 pages long.. It was filed by twenty-six women members of the women's varsity beach volleyball team and six members of the women's club rowing team in the U.S.. There is a federal law known as Title IX, which prohibits sex discrimination by the University of Oregon and all educational institutions that receive funds from the federal government. A complaint filed by members of the women's beach volleyball team alleges that Oregon violates Title IX by depriving them and all other varsity female student-athletes of equal treatment and equal athletic financial aid in the course of their education..Basically, what the women's club rowing team members are trying to achieve is a way to hold Oregon accountable for denying them and all other female students at Oregon equal opportunities to participate in varsity athletics on a regular basis.

The law of Title IX has been in place for more than fifty years now.. "Oregon needs to comply with this law as soon as possible", said Arthur H.. The women's case is being handled by Bailey & Glasser, LLP in Oakland, California, which is the lead counsel for the women. As a lead plaintiff and captain of the women's varsity beach volleyball team, Ashley Schroeder said, "According to the way the beach volleyball team at Oregon has been treated, female athletes at Oregon do not require much food and water, clean clothes or uniforms, scholarships, medical treatment or mental health services, their own facilities, locker rooms, proper transportation, or any other basic necessities.. Athletes who are male are treated incredibly better in almost every aspect of their lives. There was a tragic and disturbing incident that took place near the public courts in Amazon Park this week, which made it impossible for us to practice.. It is not safe for us to use the restrooms there because they are not safe and there are sometimes people who are using drugs in the stalls when we use them.. Despite this, the men's teams have full scholarships, multi-million dollar budgets, and state-of-the-art facilities at a professional level;. In the lawsuit, Oregon cites its own data as evidence that the school is denying women equal access to athletic aid and treatment as a result of its policy. It is estimated that women make up 49% of Oregon's student-athletes, according to the state's Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act figures, which have been verified by the state as accurate to the federal government, but Oregon spends only 25% of the state's athletic dollars and 15% of the state's recruiting dollars on them.. If Oregon had to make up for the unequal athletic aid it paid to its male student-athletes between 2017-18 and 2021-22, the period in which data is publicly available for the past five years, then it would have to pay over $4 million to its student-athletes..It is estimated that it will have to pay out $5 million in damages to its female student-athletes. There is a lawsuit filed by the women's club rowing team captain, Elise Haverland, who states, "While we love this school, the school is not only treating its women athletes unfairly, they are also denying us and other women equal opportunities to participate." It is estimated that Oregon needs to add at least 94 varsity women athletes to reach proportionality. That includes a women's rowing team and many other sports.

As I said to the young women, they did not go to college thinking that they would file a lawsuit against their university, but they are determined to fight for what is right.
