Cirba Solutions Helps Toyota Expand Battery Recycling Network to Nationwide Program

In addition to its commitment to creating a closed-loop battery ecosystem and working toward its carbon neutrality goals, Toyota Motor North America (Toyota) announced today that it will be expanding its battery recycling network through a new partnership with Cirba Solutions, a leader in battery recycling materials and management services.. Through this agreement, Toyota and Cirba Solutions will be able to enhance their growing relationship by expanding Toyota's battery recycling network and optimizing Toyota's logistics network for reusing and recycling end-of-life electrified vehicle batteries, including those in hybrid vehicles (HEV), plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) and battery electric vehicles (BEV)..  
 
As a result of Cirba Solutions' extensive and well-established transportation and recycling networks, Toyota Motor North America has nationwide battery collection and recycling service, resulting in lower costs and lower operational carbon footprints, according to Christopher Yang, Toyota Motor North America's group vice president of Business Development. Having been one of the largest battery recycling companies in North America for over a decade, Cirba Solutions offers a coast-to-coast collection and recycling network and is one of the largest battery recycling companies in the world. There will be a collaboration between Toyota and Cirba Solutions and the focus will be on the collection, transportation, dismantling and processing of lithium-ion electrified vehicle batteries that have reached the end of their useful lives in the Midwest and East Coast.. As part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Cirba Solutions' Lancaster, Ohio facility recently received an $82+ million grant from the Department of Energy that will allow it to process the data. In order to achieve a maximum 95 percent recovery rate from scrap and end-of-life batteries, this facility will use advanced technology to extract critical minerals from scrap and end-of-life batteries, then supply battery-grade metals back into the supply chain

According to Toyota's agreement with Cirba Solutions, the company anticipates that by reducing the average number of miles driven for collection and recycling from 1,251 to 582, based on 2022 data, and by focusing on the Midwest and East Coast regions, Toyota will have at least 70 percent fewer transportation and logistics costs.. There are some cases, such as the Cincinnati region, where the new recycling collaboration is expected to reduce the total mileage driven for these activities by around 94 percent in some cases. Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina (TBMNC), which is currently under construction and is scheduled to be operational in 2025, has a total investment of nearly $14 billion.
