THE BIGGEST PROBLEM FACING THE TRUCKING INDUSTRY IS FUEL COSTS.

The American Transportation Research Institute, a non-profit organisation that conducts research on the trucking industry, today released its 18th annual Top Industry Issues report.

The report identifies the top industry concerns, including fuel prices, the driver shortage, truck parking, driver compensation, the economy, and for the first time, speed limiters.

According to ATA Chairman Harold A. Sumerford Jr., “ATRI’s list is a true depiction of what it was like to be a trucker this year.” “Finding drivers and high fuel prices were two of our industry’s main concerns; these problems were made more challenging by the state of the economy and the ongoing shortage of truck parking. Thankfully, ATRI not only identifies the problems, but also suggests a variety of potential fixes that policymakers could implement.

Fuel prices were named as the top industry concern in a year with record-high fuel prices, surpassing the driver shortage, which had been the top concern for five years in a row. The lack of suitable truck parking was the top problem this year, followed by the shortage of drivers. This year, Driver Compensation and the Economy rounded out the top five.

Speed Limiters ranked in the top ten this year for the first time, landing in ninth overall and fifth among commercial driver respondents, following the issuance earlier this year of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Notice of Intent to engage in a speed limiter rulemaking in 2023.
