Dan Van Alstine, president and COO of Ruan Transportation Management Systems, Des Moines, Iowa, was chosen as the 78th chairman of the Federation by the American Trucking Associations Board of Directors today.

Van Alstine stated, “I am genuinely humbled and honoured to be here and to serve as the chairman of this fantastic institution. “It is an enormous honour to represent the millions of Americans who work in the transportation and logistics sector to move our nation.”

Van Alstine takes over as ATA chairman from Harold Sumerford Jr., CEO of J&M Tank Lines in Birmingham, Alabama.

“Dan is the ideal candidate to serve as the ATA’s new chairman. He listens, inquires, and then acts. That is leadership “ATA CEO Chris Spear made the statement. We are lucky to have him as our chairman because of his capacity to inspire and challenge others to perform at their highest level.

Dan is about to go on a voyage that promises to be very unique, and I want to wish him well, said Sumerford. I also want to express my gratitude to the ATA staff and my fellow members for their assistance over the last year. As chairman, I could not have hoped for a better year.

The Board also chose Darren Hawkins, CEO of YRC Worldwide Inc., Overland Park, Kansas, as ATA second vice chairman and Andrew Boyle, co-president of Boyle Transportation, Billerica, Massachusetts, as ATA first vice chairman.
