The SDS Platform software has been deployed for the first time by The Data Economics Company (DECO) and Smallholder Data Services (SDS) to provide visibility, traceability, and verification for farmers’ regenerative agricultural products using farm-level data and the Lydion® Engine. As a result, enterprise-level agricultural product buyers from the food and apparel industries may reliably audit and trace farm products to advertise finished goods to consumers as “regenerative.”
In order to improve smallholder farming practises, such as adaptive landscape management, SDS has been awarded a grant from The Rockefeller Foundation. This grant will support research and development of mobile implementations of the SDS platform as well as SDS’s efforts to improve smallholder farming practises in Thailand, Haiti, Ecuador, and the Dominican Republic.
Hugh Locke, co-founder of SDS and president of the Smallholder Farmers Alliance, explained that “regenerative agriculture” means that each farm’s contribution to and relationship with its ecosystem are crucial. “With the help of this project, we can help companies lower barriers between consumers and farmers. This is particularly helpful for regenerative agriculture, which includes the human tales of farmers, their families, and their communities in addition to the ecological and agricultural effects.”
