The GHG Protocol, the primary tool used globally by businesses and governments to know, quantify, and manage their emissions, has recommended that Scala Data Centers, the leading Latin American platform for sustainable data centres in the Hyperscale market, measure 100% of Scope 3. Since it comprises the carbon emissions produced by the company’s value chain associated with the acquisition of commodities and the relocation of personnel, among other things, Scope 3 is the most difficult to measure. Since its founding in 2020, the company has completely neutralised all of its emissions, making it a pioneer in the industry in the area.
Although it is not a requirement, Scala thoroughly measured and neutralised Scope 3 emissions in accordance with its unwavering commitment to sustainability. “We hope that it will involve our ecosystem and peers so that they embrace it as a practise,” says Christiana Weisshuhn, Scala’s Senior Director of Strategy and ESG Program. “It’s a project that makes us proud and differentiates us from the market.
As a result of using only renewable energy since its inception, Scala has achieved zero emissions under Scope 2 of the GHG Protocol, which measures emissions resulting from electricity use. Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), which are recognised by International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-RECs), which attest that the electricity utilised is derived from a renewable source, are used by the company to purchase energy.
