Very large container ship anchor rotations have increased at China’s Qingdao Port, a subsidiary of Shandong Port Group and the second-largest foreign trade port in eastern Shandong Province, according to China Media Group.
More than 300 ultra-large container ships have been handled by the port. Typically 400 metres long, ultra-large container ships can hold more than 20,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).
Additionally, the port handled 200-meter-long container ships more than 3,900 times, a 7% rise year over year, according to CMG.
Under the effects of COVID-19, it is challenging to handle such a significant amount of freight, especially with a smaller crew. However, thanks to the port’s record intelligence technology, the unloading rate at Qingdao Port climbed by 16% from January to November.
The world port and maritime transportation industries have been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak. Major Chinese ports, however, have seen an increase in throughput and made considerable strides in digital and smart construction, taking the lead in the global development of smart ports.
The first intelligent air transport system capable of handling 1.5 million TEUs annually is located in Qingdao Port. In June, the system broke its previous record by handling up to 67.76 TEUs in an hour, averaging 60.18 TEUs per hour, a 14.2% increase.
According to the Ministry of Transportation, China has the most automated terminals built or under construction in the world right now. Automated overhead cranes or tracks are present in each of the major ports in Tianjin and Shanghai.
Mi Weijian, a professor at Shanghai Maritime University, said that the idea and execution of establishing smart ports have been inventive when combined with ongoing investment in domestic ports and a sizable number of high-tech businesses.
