The results of the 11th annual Data and Analytics Leadership Executive Survey of Fortune 1000 and industry leading Chief Data Officers (CDO), Chief Data & Analytics Officers (CDAO), and senior corporate data and business leaders have been released by the formerly NewVantage Partners, now a division of Wavestone. Delivering Business Value from Data and Analytics Investments is the theme of the 2023 Data Leadership Survey.
The 2023 Data and Analytics Leadership poll attracted the most respondents since the study’s start in 2012, consisting of data executives who held CDO, CDAO, and other senior data leadership positions at 116 Fortune 1000 businesses or organisations throughout 2022. 84.6% of survey respondents this year held the position of chief data officer, chief data & analytics officer, or the most senior data leadership title within their organisation, an increase of 10% from the previous year and nearly 20% over the previous five years.
Randy Bean, Innovation Fellow at Wavestone and Founder of NewVantage Partners, and Thomas H. Davenport, author of the seminal study Competing on Analytics, write in the Foreword to this year’s survey: “The eleventh survey in this series provides a wealth of evidence for the rise in importance of data among major corporations. Some of this transformation has happened rather quickly. The Chief Data Officer position has rapidly spread across additional industries and grown much more widespread. However, these quick shifts in data’s significance contrast with other regions’ stagnation or, in some circumstances, regression. Companies still struggle with the human aspect of data, and neither data leaders nor the organisations they support seem eager to shift their mindsets.”
