The expanding usage of software in contemporary home appliances and the rise of internet-connected devices are both covered by the IEC 60335 Annex U certificate of conformity. The certification ensures that these appliances remain safe for consumers to use throughout their lifespan, especially when connected to public networks via IoT devices. This is because consumer electronics are increasingly using programmable electronic circuits and software is playing a significant role in many household appliances.
To prevent unwanted access and guarantee the security of remote communication via public networks, new requirements were added to Annex U of the IEC 60335-1:2020 safety regulations, which were published in September 2020. Businesses exporting home appliances to Europe must comply with this criteria.
