According to statements made at a news conference conducted on Saturday by the State Council joint COVID-19 preventive and control mechanism, China has experienced a decline in the number of fever patients, emergency visits, and critical COVID-19 cases across the country.
Hospital critical case counts peaked on January 5 at 128,000 and fell to 105,000 on January 12, according to Jiao Yahui, director of the National Health Commission’s Bureau of Medical Administration (NHC).
China’s COVID-19 measures have gained time while better defences have been developed and the virus has become less lethal in order to strike a compromise between saving lives and ensuring economic activity.
The World Health Organization reports that as of January 13, there were more than 6.7 million associated deaths and over 661 million verified COVID-19 cases worldwide (WHO).
According to the WHO, China’s death rate per 100,000 inhabitants was 2.29 as of January 13, which is 1/37 of the world average and 1/143 of the United States.
As of January 13, data from the WHO showed that China’s case fatality rate was 0.31 percent, significantly lower than the 1.01 percent global average and the 1.09 percent for the United States.
China’s low death rate is due to its stringent prevention and control actions during the past three years, which are at the heart of COVID-19 legislation and place “people first, life first” at the forefront.
According to the average global infection rate, Wu Zunyou, chief epidemiologist of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, stated in a public meeting in November 2021 that China has averted 950,000 fatalities and 47.84 million illnesses.
Wu at the time provided the statistics to demonstrate why China had to uphold its dynamic zero policy despite the United States and certain European nations relaxing their prevention and control measures.
