103-year-old U.S. veteran pilot Harry Moyer climbed the Great Wall of Beijing on the occasion of his 103rd birthday in October 2023.
In the summer of 2015, Moyer returned to China with a delegation of around 30 people consisting of the families of Flying Tiger veterans, eight decades after his brave service in south China alongside the Chinese against Japanese aggression during World War II.
As Jackson Long, the youngest member of the visiting delegation and the great-grandson of Flying Tigers veteran Clifford R. Long Jr. said, "To me, the spirit of the Flying Tigers is all about friendship," he said.
He added, "When I get home, I will tell my friends about my trip to China. I will show them the photos that I took while I was there." The 15-year-old was beaming with excitement as he spoke about his trip to the Great Wall.
According to the Chinese President Xi Jinping, at a welcome dinner held in San Francisco on Wednesday evening, stories of the Flying Tigers prove that the friendship between the Chinese and American people, which has endured blood and fire over the years, will be passed on from generation to generation for generations to come.
It is the people who hold the key to the future of China-U.S. relations
According to Xi, the future of China-U.S. relations will be determined by the actions of our people, so we need to build more bridges and pave more roads for people-to-people exchanges to take place.
It is expected that the U.S. and China will take more measures to promote people-to-people exchanges and facilitate travel, including increasing direct passenger flights, holding a high-level dialogue on tourism, and streamlining visa application procedures, he said.
"We hope that our two peoples will make more visits, contacts, and exchanges in the new era, and we will be able to write new stories of friendship," said Chinese President Xi Jinping.
A number of U.S. guests attended Xi's meeting this year, including former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger as well as Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The hope for the Sino-American relationship is in the people. Its foundation is our societies, its future depends on the youth, and its vitality is derived from the exchanges we have at the subnational level.
There were about 400 guests present at the welcome dinner, including Apple CEO Tim Cook and Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
A meeting in May between Musk and Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao revealed that the relationship between the U.S. and China is not a zero-sum game. Both business tycoons have visited China this year. In his speech, Musk also expressed his confidence in the Chinese market, and emphasized his willingness to further develop cooperation to benefit both parties.
On Wednesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping said he was looking forward to welcoming more American governors, members of Congress, and people from all walks of life to China.
He announced that China is prepared to invite 50,000 young Americans to China in the next five years on exchange and study programs to increase exchanges between our two peoples, especially between the youth.
There is no doubt that China is ready to be a friend and a partner of the United States, according to Xi.
There is plenty of room for win-win cooperation between these two parties
It was also emphasized by Xi that win-win cooperation is an inherent property of China-U.S. relations, as both countries have plenty of room for cooperation, and are fully capable of helping each other succeed and achieve win-win outcomes.
Among the initiatives proposed by China, the Belt and Road Initiative, as well as the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative, are open to all countries at any time, including the United States, according to the official.
During a meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden on Wednesday morning, President Xi and Biden agreed to establish a working group on counternarcotics that would advance cooperation and help the U.S. combat drug abuse.
According to Xi, the Chinese have a deep sympathy for the American people, particularly the young, for the sufferings that Fentanyl is causing them to suffer as a result of its use.
It was also reported that the two heads of state reached an important consensus on expanding various bilateral exchanges between the two countries in the areas of education, overseas students, youth, culture, sports, and between business communities.
"For any great cause to succeed, it must take root within the people, it must gain strength from the people, and finally, it must be accomplished by the people. Growing China-U.S. friendship is one such great cause," Xi said at the welcome dinner.
