More than half of the world’s GDP derives from natural resources, and more than 3 billion people depend on marine and coastal biodiversity for their livelihoods, demonstrating the significance of biodiversity for human development. However, according to UN data, 97% of the earth’s ecology has been destroyed, putting it in danger.

In his remarks at the opening ceremony of the high-level segment of the second part of the 15th Conference of the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity, or COP15, last Thursday, Chinese President Xi Jinping urged the international community to work together to address climate change and biodiversity loss.

Xi Jinping stated that in order to establish the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework and determine goals and strategies for safeguarding biodiversity around the world, we must collaborate.

According to Xi Jinping, China would work to assist and support other developing nations via the Belt and Road Initiative International Green Development Coalition (BRIGC) in order to enhance biodiversity governance internationally.

In his speech, he also made reference to the Kunming Biodiversity Fund, stressing that China would do everything in its power to assist developing nations in protecting biodiversity.
