From November 24 to 25 in the coastal city of Wenzhou in east China's Zhejiang Province, the 2023 Mayors Exchange Conference on Maritime Silk Road City Influence will be held in honor of the tenth anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) this year.
According to the Executive Committee of the conference, the conference aims to facilitate mutual learning and win-win cooperation among municipal officials from Maritime Silk Road cities, experts and scholars from 13 foreign countries, through the exchange of ideas and experiences.
A main session, five parallel sessions, and several special activities will be held at the event, which will include the release of a list of the "Top Ten Influential Maritime Silk Road Cities 2023," a city branding and case study by Maritime Silk Road city municipal officials, as well as the release of the "Maritime Silk Road Star City Index."
A major focus of the conference will be the launch of the Maritime Silk Road Star City Index, which will provide a comprehensive display of diversity along the trade route, as well as a scientific evaluation of these cities.
There are 20 indicators that make up the index system, which assesses a city's global connectivity, trade network, cultural heritage, and international exchanges.
There will be a number of municipal officials attending the conference from well-known Maritime Silk Road cities like Wenzhou in China, Male in the Maldives, Castellamonte in Italy, and Barcelona in Spain, as well as their cities' unique practices and charms. This conference will also be the launch of an initiative aimed at promoting innovative development on Maritime Silk Road city cooperation.
Among the 14 coastal cities in China, Wenzhou was among the first to be opened to the outside world as an important hub along the Maritime Silk Road. As a result of its significance in the ancient trade route on the sea, the Shuomen Ancient Port located in Wenzhou has been selected as one of the top ten national archaeological discoveries for 2022.
Wenzhou's trade with the BRI countries has also increased from 53.33 billion yuan in 2013 to 147.05 billion yuan in 2022, which is an increase of 30 percent.
Throughout the past decade, the spirit of the Silk Road, which embodies openness and inclusion, mutual learning and mutual benefit, has been translated into reality, with many stories relating to the shared prosperity that has resulted from its practices on the sea, according to Chen Yingxu, Wenzhou's vice mayor. As members of the Maritime Silk Road, Chen said that we are a community that shares both our blessings and our sorrows.
