As part of the collaboration between the Prince George's County Workforce Development Board, Employ Prince George's, and the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades District Council 51, we are excited to announce the grand opening of the new Building Trades Career Center on December 8, 2023.. This cutting-edge training facility is located at 4700 Boston Way in Lanham, Maryland and aims to provide Prince George's County residents with the skills they need to become successful workers with union employers in the construction industry.. A career coaching center will be located within the building trades center, which will provide career coaching and job readiness training as well as training programs and apprenticeships for all unions within the building trades.. In the United States, this will be the first affiliated American Job Center that will open inside of a building trades union that is affiliated with American Job Centers

The Building Trades Career Center will serve as a principal training and career development location for Employ Prince George's construction and infrastructure workforce development initiatives, which are spearheaded by the nationally recognized Construction Works Program (CWP) and Apprenticeship Innovation Program (AIP).. As Walter Simmons, President and CEO of Employ Prince George's, expressed his enthusiasm over the opening of the Building Trades Career Center, he stated: "The opening of this Career Center marks an exciting milestone for the Prince George's County Public Workforce System and the local economy in Prince George's County.". It will serve as a hub for our comprehensive construction trades training programs, a bridge connecting Prince George's County residents with the building trades unions, and a tool to develop Prince George's County's next generation of skilled laborers while connecting residents with jobs that pay a livable wage and do not require a college degree.

We are delighted to be able to open this new center, which will enable Prince George's County to become a national leader in workforce development for construction trades," said Angela Alsobrooks, the County Executive of Prince George's County.. It is our commitment to provide opportunities for all our residents to obtain a good-paying job, whether they are in career and technical education programs or returning citizens and veterans who have served their country in the military. It is our goal to continue our partnership with local building trades unions in Prince George's County in order to train the next generation of skilled workers in the community

I am very excited to support this partnership between Employ Prince George's and the International Union of Painters & Allied Trades District Council 51, which is a first-of-its-kind arrangement between these two organizations," said Governor Wes Moore. With the help of existing federal funds and some state support, we will be able to establish a long-standing career and training center in Maryland that will benefit thousands of Marylanders seeking employment for years to come.
A collaborative effort was undertaken by Employ Prince George's, Prince George's County Government, the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades District Council 51 (IUPAT DC51), and industry partners in order to complete this project. There was generous funding provided for the center by the Prince George's County Government, the Prince George's County Workforce Development Board, and a Bond Bill passed by the Maryland General Assembly and sponsored by the Maryland Delegate Jazz Lewis.
As a result, Bidenomics has been based on providing access to state-of-the-art training coupled with job opportunities. These are the key keys to its success. It is not just the short-term jobs created by historic federal investments in infrastructure; it is also the springboard for long-term careers, providing better wages and benefits to millions of people who are unable to access the middle class," says Brian Courtien, Business Manager/Secretary Treasurer of IUPAT DC 51.
The work we have done today is a perfect example of how hard work and dedication leads to success. There is no doubt that this vital Building Trades Career Center will bring hope and fresh talent to companies in the construction industry," stated Delegate Jazz Lewis in a statement.. As I said, this is the outcome of years of hard work by Employ Prince George's, myself, and so many partners to create an expansive and innovative training and preparation center to train and prepare a new wave of construction industry workers right here in Prince George's County in order to meet the needs of the construction industry.

Employ Prince George's will also operate the in-school youth program, Youth Career Connections, that is funded through the Blueprint for Maryland's Future, with the aim of enhancing youth apprenticeship programming in Prince George's County as part of the program.. It was exciting to see the implementation of the Blueprint for Maryland's Future through the opening of this new career center to connect students with in-demand job opportunities in the building trades, according to Rachel Hise, Executive Director of the Blueprint for Maryland's Future Accountability & Implementation Board (AIB).. There is no doubt that this new career center is a tangible example of how the Blueprint for Maryland's Future is being implemented in action by providing students with opportunities to succeed in high-demand careers
