The first eVTOL (electric device vertical take-off and landing) test flights conducted by humans in Italian airspace were successfully performed by Aeroporti di Roma (ADR), Atlantia, UrbanV, and Urban Air Mobility (UAM) pioneer Volocopter.

These studies were conducted in a mobility environment set up at Fiumicino’s Leonardo da Vinci International Airport.

The partners have reached a significant milestone in the initiative to introduce Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) services in Rome by 2024 by opening Italy’s first fully operational vertiport.

The first public crewed test flight of an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft was carried out this morning by Aeroporti di Roma, Volocopter, UrbanV, and Atlantia in Italy. The partners also hosted an interactive booking session on Volocopter’s VoloIQ digital platform and displayed the nation’s first vertiport for advanced air mobility (AAM) experiments. One year has passed since the first eVTOL prototype was unveiled in Italy. The first AAM services between Fiumicino Airport and the city of Rome are anticipated to begin by 2024 thanks to considerable advancements achieved over the past year in flying technology, vertiport design, and regulatory requirements.
