FMCS Congratulates the Parties on the Resolution of the Gulf Coast Rail Dispute

After the dispute was brought before the Surface Transportation Board (STB) in 2021, the parties began mediation with FMCS in June. The agreement brings the Gulf Coast one step closer to restoring and expanding passenger rail service between New Orleans and Mobile, nearly two decades after Hurricane Katrina wreaked havoc on the region’s rail infrastructure.

FMCS Acting Director Greg Goldstein said, “FMCS extends our congratulations to each of the parties and their leadership for their steadfast determination in reaching an agreement.” “FMCS is pleased that we were able to assist in what many consider to be a difficult and contentious dispute.”

FMCS Commissioners Dave Moora and Brenda Pryor, along with STB Commissioners Ron Molteni and Bob Granatelli, were appointed to mediate the case and helped lead the parties to a resolution just eight days before the STB’s final Nov. 30 hearing.

“It was clear that Amtrak, the host railroads, and the Port of Mobile were committed to their participation in the process and demonstrated good faith throughout our collaboration,” Moora said. “It’s an incredible feeling any time an agreement can be reached, especially one with such a significant public benefit and economic impact.”
