A new service evaluating lithium-ion battery-powered aircraft ground support equipment to meet UL 5840:2022, the Standard for Electrical Systems of Battery Powered Aviation Ground Support Equipment, was introduced today by UL Solutions, a global leader in applied safety research.

To explicitly address the danger of fire, electric shock, and explosion risks associated with lithium-ion battery-powered airport ground support equipment, UL 5840 establishes clearly specified safety criteria (GSE). The Standard enables customers to hasten the adoption of battery-powered ground support equipment in order to comply with local authorities’ mandates for carbon emission reduction programmes and to be eligible for financial aid for further environmentally friendly operations.
Key players in the aviation sector supported the creation of this Standard as they replace their outdated ground support equipment with more energy-efficient electric vehicles in an effort to reduce the environmental impact of airport operations. The Standard also covers the practise of installing lithium-ion batteries into more conventional diesel-powered machinery, as this is a common way to modernise fleets.

According to Maurice Johnson, product manager at UL Solutions, “UL Solutions is solving a huge concern for the aviation sector by addressing safer installation, usage, and maintenance of lithium-ion batteries in aviation ground support equipment.” “Our new service is a critical enabler for the aviation sector to hasten the adoption of electric ground support equipment, which may greatly help fulfil carbon emission reduction goals,” says the company.
