It is important to note that IEEE P2020 is part of the IEEE Standards Association (SA), a standards development working group within the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), primarily focused on addressing the unique challenges involved in imaging standards for automotive cameras.
The IEEE P2020 working group was formed in 2016 in response to a significant gap in existing imaging standards for automotive applications that had been identified. The increasing integration of cameras into modern vehicles, which often serve as crucial components for safety systems, has made it imperative to develop a consistent approach to measuring the quality of images in these vehicles. In spite of the fact that there are several standards in place, such as EMVA1288, ISO12233, ISO15739, ISO18844, and IEEE 1858, it has been found that they are not adequate to address the unique challenges posed by automotive imaging

IEEE P2020's primary goal is to publish an international standard that defines a relevant set of methods and metrics for assessing the quality of automotive images using a set of relevant metrics. With the creation of this standard, the entire industry will be aligned and reference points will be established for cross-industry collaborations.
A key milestone achieved by the IEEE P2020 working group was the publication of a white paper in 2018, which provided an initial analysis of existing metrics and standards, culminating in the publication of a draft in 2022. This year's annual meeting aims to focus on the unique challenges faced by automotive imaging industries, such as scenarios that involve both human vision and machine vision, uncontrolled environments, illumination challenges, and a wide range of temperatures (-40 to 85 degrees Celsius).
