It was found in the survey that local shelters are experiencing severe financial challenges as a result of widespread donor confusion when it comes to the role of national organizations such as the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and the Humane Society of America.. In contrast to what most animal lovers believe, local animal shelters often receive little to no money from these national animal welfare organizations at a time when on average there is an average of one animal in harm's way.In the United States, more than 5 million shelter pets are euthanized each year.
