Taiko Unveils Latest Testnet “Katla” with Multi-Proofs, Paving the Way for Mainnet Launch

As part of the launch, Taiko, a provider of Ethereum layer 2 scaling solutions, has announced the launch of Katla, their Alpha-6 testnet. Katla is a new rollup design that supports both optimistic rollup as well as ZK rollup and will lay the groundwork for the launch of the mainnet in 2024.

There is also a based rollup of Taiko. This means that Taiko does not have a centralized sequencer and instead relies on the Ethereum block builders for transaction sequencing. This approach fully inherits the benefits of Ethereum in terms of security, liveness, and censorship resistance.

One of Katla's most notable features is that it can adjust rollups from optimistic to ZK, adjusting to the changing technological landscape. Because of this, as the cost of generating ZK proofs decreases, BCR-based layer 2s can be seamlessly transitioned to pure ZK rollups as the cost of generating ZK proofs decreases, ensuring long-term suitability. Katla also simplifies the setup of app-chains within the Taiko tech stack by removing the burden of generating ZKPs for every block for app chain owners.
