The Amtrak® Pacific Surfliner® service has temporarily ceased operations south of Irvine until further notice due to emergency track repairs, according to the Los Angeles – San Diego – San Luis Obispo (LOSSAN) Rail Corridor Agency, which oversees the service.
Geologists, geotechnical engineers, and surveyors were consulted to determine whether there would be a safety issue along a section of track in the San Clemente region. In order to safeguard the security of the crew and passengers, the LOSSAN Agency decided to immediately halt operations.
The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), the track’s owner, will be performing emergency repairs to stabilise the right-of-way during the shutdown, keeping the San Clemente Pier and San Juan Capistrano stations closed.
According to Jason Jewell, interim managing director of the LOSSAN Agency, “passenger and crew safety is our top priority, and we are doing our best to minimise disruptions for travellers to and from San Diego.” We are collaborating with our partners to quickly install bus bridges between Irvine and Oceanside and restore service between Oceanside and San Diego.
