Power Broker, a cutting-edge open API platform, will coordinate reducing EV charging to improve overall grid stability and resilience while offering real-time information into the effect of EV charging on regional electric distribution networks.

The development and testing of Power Broker, a collection of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for controlling electric vehicle (EV) charging, will be conducted as part of a research initiative that EVoke Systems and Argonne National Laboratory have joined forces to launch.
The Power Broker API framework leverages the idea of energy services contracts to convey energy information exchanges and financial transactions in order to reduce the impact that the increase of EV charging will have on the local electric power demand. Real-time price adjustments encourage drivers and owners of charging stations to limit demand during severe weather or other unplanned grid events, which will improve the grid’s stability and resilience.
Although the additional power demand for EV charging may be accommodated by the energy grid, there are some instances, places, and events when utilities struggle to satisfy peak demand—especially during harsh weather. The predicted expansion of commercial EV fleets will have an effect on local power demand, which may go over safety thresholds or worsen power quality. Real-time EV charging management can considerably lower these risks and improve the overall resiliency and reliability of the grid.
