Since COVID-19 first appeared, the world has been fighting the epidemic as it spread havoc all over the planet in a battle against time. One of the most important milestones in the battle against the virus is the creation of safe and effective vaccines.
China has advanced COVID-19 vaccine development over the past nearly three years and made significant gains toward fulfilling its pledge to make the vaccinations a worldwide public good.
China is a leader in vaccine research.
After the initial epidemic outbreak towards the end of 2019, Chinese researchers immediately published the whole genome sequence of the virus in January 2020. Global scientists applauded the decision to make the data publicly available.
In a tweet, medical researcher and director of the Wellcome Trust, a charity organisation for health research with offices in London, Jeremy Farrar, called it a “potentially truly momentous moment in global public health-must be celebrated.”
The adenovirus vector vaccine created by a team under the direction of Chinese military medical expert Chen Wei became the first vaccination to be approved for clinical trials in China in March 2020.
The second set of trials began in April after the first phase was finished. According to the World Health Organization, China’s COVID-19 vaccine was the first in the world to enter the second phase of clinical trials at that time (WHO).
