Protecting our Youth is a new simulation developed by Kognito, an experiential learning organisation, for use in pre-kindergarten through twelfth-grade classrooms and by college professors and instructors.
Educators may learn the signs of child abuse, neglect, and human trafficking and where to refer victims by participating in this interactive simulation.
According to the CDC, at least 1 in 7 American children are neglected or abused each year. It was predicted that 1,750 children would lose their lives to maltreatment in 20201. There is evidence that children are more likely to report abuse and receive help if they have an adult they can talk to about their experiences. The Kognito simulation uses conversational strategies to encourage making and maintaining reliable connections, seeking and sharing information, and being referred to relevant services.
In order to create Protecting Our Youth, we consulted with professionals. Students who may have been victims of abuse, neglect, or human trafficking can be identified, approached, and referred with the help of this resource. A word from Kognito’s Product Manager, Nadia Stamp.
This simulation is included as a supplementary lesson in Kognito’s current Sexual Misconduct Prevention for Faculty & Staff, which is aimed at college faculty and staff. If you are working with children, you are required by most states to do this course once every year.
