A Massachusetts-based electric-vehicle battery startup, Nanoramic Laboratories, recently announced that it would be building its first major factory in the city of Bridgeport with a $47.5 million federal grant. Nanoramic Laboratories has partnered with the University of Bridgeport (UB), along with a few other colleges and universities in the area, as a workforce development partner.
The innovative company decided on Bridgeport after a nationwide search to identify a location for its first factory - a search that included several other potential sites, including New York State, which the company had considered as well.

The Nanoramic co-founder, John Cooley, Ph.D., was at the Nanoramic headquarters on Friday, December 1.. On the campus of UB, the Steans Manufacturing Center, operated by Goodwin University, was visited. On behalf of Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont, and along with AdvanceCT CEO John Bourdeaux, Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz, University of Buffalo President Danielle Wilken, and other state and community leaders, Cooley announced the exciting collaboration between the University of Buffalo and AdvanceCT.. As a speaker at the event, Cooley highlighted the infrastructure and workforce opportunities Connecticut's largest city offers to manufacturers, describing Bridgeport as offering a unique combination and dense concentration of highly specialized manufacturing and engineering talent..His statement continued that he was impressed by the response of the community in Bridgeport, Connecticut, as well as the "focus that the city of Bridgeport and the state of Connecticut place on advanced manufacturing."

A key advantage of establishing a business in Bridgeport is the fact that there are numerous opportunities for training and recruitment of the workforce available through partnerships with nearby schools such as University of Bridgeport, which is conveniently located nearby.. While Nanoramic Laboratories and its parent company, FastCap Systems, conducted their nationwide search throughout the summer of 2023, the company was connected to University of Bridgeport through AdvanceCT - a private nonprofit with a focus on business development in the state of Connecticut.. In these discussions, the groups discussed how they could address Nanoramic's anticipated workforce needs in a way that would benefit the company, the city, and UB's students at the same time. Eventually, Nanoramic expects to be able to employ 200 or more people at its Bridgeport facility

The University of Oregon is collaborating with Nanoramic and the Workforce Planning Agency with the goal of supporting training programs, internships, and apprenticeships for the purpose of developing the skills necessary to commercialize the startup's ground-breaking electrode technology for electric vehicles.. With this partnership, existing University of Bridgeport programs will be used to develop workforce development initiatives, including Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Sustainable Energy Engineering, and Business Administration with a concentration in Operations Management.

In addition to the Career Services Center and Innovation Center at UB, there are other opportunities for workforce development. Goodwin University, which acquired UB in 2021, also offers its own Engineering, Manufacturing, Business, and Management programs, in addition to its state of the art Steans Manufacturing Center, which Goodwin opened on UB's campus in October of 2023.
Danielle Wilken, the president of the University of Bridgeport, is looking forward to exploring the possibilities of how the school and its students can play a role in helping Nanoramic and other advanced manufacturing companies build a brighter and more prosperous future for the city and region.. "Hands-on training for a skilled workforce is one of the key elements for Connecticut to boost its economy and make its communities more sustainable". In Bridgeport, Nanoramic Laboratories will be able to build high-performance, low-cost batteries for a more sustainable future right here in the city because of this transformational investment," she said.

In her remarks, Lieutenant Governor Bysiewicz expressed excitement at the impact this investment will have on the region, saying, "This is transformational for our state and for the country. The infrastructure investment we are going to make here is one of the largest infrastructure investments that our country has seen in over half a century. It will transform this community."
There is no doubt that innovation changes the world, it is taking place right here in Bridgeport," said Governor Lamont. "This is our future." In closing remarks, President Wilken echoed the Governor's sentiments, saying, "We look forward to playing our part in this future."
